Our friend and former Just Jazz Staff Photographer Hal Masonberg, who now lives in Barcelona, Spain and covers the local jazz scene, posted some fantastic photos and a review of a recent performance by Just Jazz Concert Series and Hancock Institute alum
and current Blue Note Records Pianist Paul Cornish, playing at the extraordinary Festival de Jazz de Barcelona. The trio features Paul on piano, Jermaine Paul on bass and Jonathan
Pinson on drums. About Pinson, Masonberg wrote, "Jonathan Pinson is someone I have had the repeated pleasure of working with on numerous occasions. He was a major contributor to LeRoy Downs and Fred Smith's Just Jazz Series at Musichead Gallery in Los Angeles. One of the greatest jazz series I ever attended. I had the privilege of being one of their main photographers for many years and Pinson quickly became, in my opinion, one of the most powerful, creative and inspired jazz drummers I have ever witnessed. He is unmatched."
We agree Hal, which inspired us to post this amazing rendition of Charlie "Yardbird" Parker's Anthropology, from our pandemic era concert recorded and presented at Musichead Gallery feat. Christian Sands (piano), Ben Williams (bass), Theo Croker (trumpet) and the dynamic, aforementioned Jonathan Pinson (drums). Enjoy this clip from the Just Jazz TV archives!
